July 3, 2025 - House sends megabill to the President, Governor Stein Vetos
House GOP advances Trump megabill after dramatic overnight vote
House Republicans advanced their “big, beautiful bill” full of President Trump’s legislative priorities early Thursday morning, overcoming a key procedural hurdle after a dramatic vote that GOP leaders left open for hours to quell an internal revolt.
The chamber voted 219-213 to adopt a rule governing debate on Trump’s domestic agenda, opening up discussion on the megabill and teeing up a final vote on the package.
….the legislation will head directly to Trump’s desk, where he’s expected to sign it with a ceremonial flourish on Independence Day.
Stein Vetoes Show Commitment to Radical Political Agenda, Higher Prices for North Carolina Families
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RALEIGH — The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) responds to the vetoes today of common sense, responsible legislation by radical liberal Gov. Josh Stein:
Charter School Changes (SB 254)
Democrats are still engaged in a war on school choice. Protecting charter schools and giving the Charter School Review Board more oversight directly over them shouldn't be controversial. The shameful rhetoric opposing the opportunity for every family to choose an education plan that works best for them continues with Gov. Stein.
The Power Bill Reduction Act (HB 266)
Only in the minds of the radical Left is this veto a good idea. Republicans stand on the side of the working men and women of our state and ending arbitrary, artificial requirements in energy production. As has been long been the case in North Carolina, Republicans work to reduce taxes and cost-of-living for families and Democrats seek to enact a woke agenda to make life more unaffordable for families and businesses.
Clarify Powers of State Auditor (HB 549)
Auditor Boliek is right: HB 549 was written to protect the independence of the State Auditor's Office. Gov. Stein's veto once again shows Democrats are more concerned with political power than ensuring our state's elected Council of State officials can successfully fulfill their duties. As with the other bills, we look forward to the General Assembly overriding this veto.

Instead of Eliminating Social Security Taxes, the Big Beautiful Bill Provides a 'Senior Bonus'
Key Points:
-
The bill does not eliminate Social Security Taxes; instead, it gives a tax break of up to $6000 per person to individual filers 65 and older with a modified adjusted gross income of up to $75,000, or married couples up to $150,000 whether they take the standard deduction or itemize their returns.
-
Only temporary, according to the bill, it would only be effective for tax years 2025 through 2028.
